Internships
Internships provide a valuable experience for both the student and sponsoring organization.听Internships, which are typically 3 to 6 months in duration, are guided by a structured learning plan that includes specific educational objectives. Meet with your advisor, view Handshake or view these internship resources.
Additionally, internships:
- Allow students to engage in higher-level thinking and functioning in an activity or series of activities relating to their chosen career fields
- Provide a supplemental learning experience in which students can apply and reinforce the skills and knowledge that have been acquired through the completion of upper-level courses pertinent to their majors
- Offer real-world perspectives on potential careers and opportunities in the students' career fields while providing valuable insight in organizational behavior
- Do not regularly engage students in routine tasks (i.e., answering telephones, filing) that are typically performed by paid employees of the organization
- Present the opportunity for students to function as pre-professionals and contribute to the advancement of the host organization while being mentored by an assigned supervisor
Experiential Learning forms the backbone of Pitt-Johnstown's commitment to real-world readiness. It is a process through which students develop knowledge and skills from experiences outside of the traditional academic setting. These includes internships, undergraduate research, volunteering, and cooperative education.
Note: Additional criteria may apply based on departmental guidelines governing internships at Pitt-Johnstown. Students are encouraged to consult with their faculty advisor in addition to the Career Services Office听when planning internship experiences.听
Additional Experiential Learning

Volunteer Experiences:听Community engagement provides students with an opportunity to volunteer at various local sites. This allows students to partner and create purposeful relationships while learning about social, cultural, and economic issues. Volunteer opportunities are available to individuals or groups.听听is an online resource to help connect people and places.
Cooperative Education:听Co-op offers students the chance to obtain a full year鈥檚-worth of work experience prior to graduation. This is an opportunity to learn, earn, and graduate with a higher starting salary, while maintaining status as a full-time undergraduate student.
